Let’s get you enrolled in Con Edison’s SmartCharge New York program!
SmartCharge New York helps EV drivers like you get the most out of their ride:
Earn cash for charging your electric vehicle at off-peak times
Track your EV’s energy consumption over time
Help reduces stress on the energy grid, ensuring more reliable service for everyone
To participate in SmartCharge New York you will either need to have either an internet-connected vehicle or charging station. Please check our FAQs for a list of supported vehicles and internet-connected chargers. You can also use this tool to enter your vehicle’s VIN and check whether it is capable of internet connectivity.
Before proceeding, please have your connected car account information ready (username, password and PIN if applicable). Please note that some auto manufacturers may require drivers to pay a one-time or ongoing fee for connected-car access. Con Edison is not responsible for any fees you may incur for connected-car access.
Once you have confirmed that you have a supported vehicle or charger and want to earn incentives for charging your EV(s) in the Con Edison service area, please review these terms & conditions (T&Cs). If you agree to all the T&Cs, follow the steps below.
1. Download the ev.energy mobile app
The ev.energy app is in the process of being customized for SmartCharge New York, and a fully customized Web Portal will be available for you to use with the same login credentials beginning in April.
2. Create an ev.energy account and enter the referral code: SCNY
After downloading the ev.energy app, open the “Create account” screen to create an account with ev.energy. Enter your email address, set a secure password, and tap the "Have an invite code?" text at the bottom of the screen. Enter the referral code "SCNY" (note, this isn’t case-sensitive) to enjoy the full program benefits and start earning incentives. You should then see "SCNY" confirmed at the bottom of the "Create account" screen.

3. Tell us about your primary charging location in the Con Edison service area
After creating your ev.energy account, confirm your primary charging location in the Con Edison service area. Drop a pin on the map identifying the location where you usually charge your EV(s), and allow ev.energy to access your location while using the app. Once you do that, we'll ask you to confirm the address on the following screen. As a reminder, only charging done within Con Edison's service area will be eligible for cash incentives through the SmartCharge New York program.
4. Tell us about your vehicle(s)
Select the make, model and trim of the electric vehicle(s) you wish to enroll in SmartCharge New York. The app will first try to connect to your vehicle’s internet connection. If that’s not possible, you’ll be given the option to instead connect to an internet-connected charging station in Step 7.
Please note, if you wish to connect multiple vehicles from different manufacturers (for example, a Tesla and a BMW), you’ll need to create a separate ev.energy account for the additional manufacturer(s). Step 9 provides more details and further instructions, but please proceed with the below steps first.

5. Connect your supported vehicle(s)
After you’ve selected your first vehicle’s make/model/trim, follow the on-screen instructions and enter your connected-car login details (username and password). This will authorize ev.energy to collect data while your vehicle is plugged in and charging for the purposes of calculating and administering SmartCharge incentives. ev.energy will not be able to see or store your username or password; these will be passed directly to the auto manufacturer in exchange for a digital token that allows ev.energy to wirelessly access your vehicle’s charging data, similar to signing into a website using your Google or Facebook account.
Please note that some auto manufacturers may require drivers to pay a one-time or ongoing fee for connected-car access. Every auto manufacturer’s platform is different, and the accuracy of the data collected from your car’s embedded SIM card may vary accordingly. As a reminder, participation in SmartCharge New York is voluntary, Con Edison cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data collected, and Con Edison is not responsible for any fees you may incur for connected-car access.
6. Tell us about your charger
Next, we ask that you provide us with information on your home charging set-up. At the "How do you charge at home?" screen, click “I have a smart charger” if you have an internet-connected charging station from ChargePoint, Enel X, or Smartenit, and proceed to Step 7. This will allow you to connect your home charging station and share your charging data with us to participate in SmartCharge New York even if you do not have an internet-connected vehicle.
If you don’t have a compatible charging station (such as a Tesla Wall Connector, or a standard 120V or 240V cable that you plug into your wall) click "I have something else" and type in the make and model of home charger, if you know it, and proceed to Step 8.

7. Connect your supported charger
If you own an internet-connected charger that is supported by ev.energy (ChargePoint, Enel X or Smartenit), you may now connect it to ev.energy. If you did not connect your vehicle to ev.energy in the previous step, we will instead use the data from your connected charger to calculate your SmartCharge incentives for charging done at home.
Instructions to connect the below supported charging stations can be found at the links below:
ChargePoint
Enel X JuiceBox
Smartenit (level 1 and level 2 portable charging cord sets)
8. Confirm your participation in the new SmartCharge New York program
Next, you will be prompted to select “Con Edison” as the Partner Supplier for this program. Select Con Edison, and then select “SmartCharge New York” as your energy rate. This will ensure you receive cash-back incentives for the EV charging you do while enrolled in the program.

9. Repeat Steps 2-8 to connect additional vehicles or chargers from different manufacturers
The ev.energy app does not yet support a customer connecting multiple vehicles or chargers from different manufacturers (for example, a Tesla and a BMW, or a ChargePoint and a Smartenit) to the same ev.energy account. If, after following the above instructions, there is an additional vehicle or charger from a different manufacturer that you'd like to enroll in SmartCharge New York, tap on the cog on the top-left corner of the app's main Dashboard to access your settings, and click the "Log Out" button at the bottom. You'll need to create a new ev.energy account using a different email address for each additional vehicle or charger manufacturer you'd like to enroll (and don't forget to enter the "SCNY" referral code!).
You’re all set!
If you made it this far, you’ll be taken to the main program Dashboard, where you can view the connectivity status of your vehicle and/or charger to the ev.energy platform along with a summary of all the charging you’ve been doing from the date you created your ev.energy account. The first SmartCharge New York incentives will be paid out in late April 2023, so expect to hear from us in early April with a summary of the off-peak incentives you’ve earned and options to claim your cash.
