Storm Dennis may have caused significant damage and disruption to parts of the UK, but ev.energy users were able to take advantage of the high winds and low electricity prices while charging their electric vehicles over the weekend.
When the storm hit around 6:30pm on February 15th, wind generated in the North Sea flooded the UK’s power grid, causing wholesale power prices to drop to as low as -3.51 p/kWh overnight.
Our users on the Octopus Agile Tariff, which varies every half-hour according to wholesale market prices, benefitted from ultra-low power prices and for a 5-hour window between 1am and 6am, the tariff prices actually turned negative, meaning that customers were PAID to consume electricity!
ev.energy’s algorithm responded to this price signal and ramped up charging the EVs for our users on the Octopus Agile tariff, soaking up the abundant wind energy and earning our users some extra money in the process. On the whole, ev.energy users on the Octopus Agile tariff earned an average of ~£1 to charge their EVs with wind energy during that overnight period – handled automatically by our algorithm while they were asleep!
