Our CEO and Co-Founder, Nick Woolley, reflects on a year of growth and innovation for ev.energy, our growing community, and the ever-evolving clean energy landscape.
As 2024 comes to a close, we look back on an extraordinary journey with our customers, partners and EV drivers. This year, ev.energy has made significant strides - advancing our mission through rapid growth in existing programs and the launch of pioneering new initiatives.
With over 20 million EVs expected to be on the road by next year and forecasts predicting a global fleet of 100 million the next decade, the industry’s momentum is undeniable.
At ev.energy, we’re uniquely positioned to support this shift. Over the past year, we’ve not only celebrated milestone achievements but also doubled down on research and product development to ensure we’re ready for the future of electrified transport.
Join us as we dive into the highlights of 2024 - a year defined by collaboration, progress, and shared success.
This year, ev.energy reached a significant milestone with 200,000 vehicles now connected to our platform. Together, we’ve powered over 7 million charging sessions, delivering an impressive 176.4 GWh of energy to EVs worldwide.
Together with our partners, we saved $3.1M for drivers and 767 metric tons of carbon emissions, demonstrating the tangible value and environmental impact of smart charging. Additionally, we ran 1,900 EV Flex events, strategically shifting vehicle load to strengthen grid resilience and support renewable energy integration.
Collaboration remains at the heart of ev.energy’s mission to unlock the full potential of an electrified transport and energy system. In 2024, we took a major step forward by integrating Rolling Energy Resources (RER) into our U.S. operations. This strategic move combined our world-class driver experience with RER’s expertise in designing and evaluating EV programs. Together, we’ve set new benchmarks for smart charging solutions, offering unparalleled value to utilities, manufacturers, and EV drivers worldwide.
This year, we welcomed 15 new utility customers and launched managed charging programs in regions spanning New Mexico to Northern Ireland. Our platform’s reach expanded further with exciting new vehicle and charger integrations, including a direct connection with Tesla via the Tesla Fleet API, as well as partnerships with Wallbox, Emporia, and more. These developments position ev.energy to deliver even greater value to drivers and grids across the globe.
In 2024, ev.energy was selected for $41M in funding from the California Energy Commission to roll out ChargeWise, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at integrating EVs into California’s power grid. Officially launched in September, the program advances our work with community choice aggregators like MCE and Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) by introducing a dynamic rate tier within their managed charging programs. ChargeWise is on track to establish a 300MW Virtual Power Plant (VPP) by 2027, helping California meet its clean energy goals, provide equitable access to affordable charging, and reduce energy costs for participants.
Our reach in the Northeast U.S. has grown significantly through collaborations with utilities like Con Edison, National Grid, Avangrid, and Eversource. These forward-thinking partners are driving the shift to electrified transportation with programs like Avangrid’s OptimizEV, which uses a tiered design to boost driver enrollment and maximize grid impact.
In the UK, we’ve achieved significant progress by supporting 1,700 dispatch events for our electricity network partners and collaborating with Flexitricity to enroll EVs in Britain’s Short-Term Operating Reserve (STOR), unlocking new value from EV flexibility in commercial energy markets. We’re proud to strengthen our relationships with existing electricity network partners while welcoming new collaborations, including Northern Powergrid.
In Europe, we expanded our work with Dutch energy retailer, ANWB Energie, whose innovative dynamic tariffs and smart charging app paid drivers for charging during periods of abundant renewable energy. This partnership not only advanced clean energy adoption but also helped ANWB Energie expand its customer base. Stay tuned for more news from Europe soon.
With the launch of the refreshed ev.energy platform, an enhanced solar EV charging solution, and our new E-Mobility API for custom-branded experiences, ev.energy is uniquely positioned to help utilities and partners succeed in an era of rapid EV growth. Together, we’re ready to optimize costs, engage drivers, and maximize value for a cleaner, electrified future.
Our commitment to groundbreaking research continues. This year, our Metering Matters report revealed key insights from the Operational Metering Trial conducted in partnership with Flexitricity and the Power Responsive Team at Britain’s National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO). These findings not only showcase our joint leadership in unlocking EV flexibility in one of the world’s most advanced energy markets but also offer a blueprint for scaling metering at the asset level globally.
This year, ev.energy proudly turned six, and our team remains as steadfast as ever in our mission to create a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. With a passionate team of 115 people across the world, we’re committed to delivering smart EV charging solutions that make a difference.
In May, we came together for our annual Team Week in London, UK, where the entire company gathered to collaborate, connect and celebrate. Highlights included a hackathon that sparked fresh ideas and social activities that strengthened our bond as a team.
We also held our first-ever Environmental Volunteering Week, with teams across cities like Edinburgh, London, New York, Portland, and San Diego coming together to give back to the planet. From planting trees to cleaning up parks and beaches, and even gaining firsthand insights into climate change, it was a week that underscored our shared commitment to sustainability.
As we look ahead, we’re excited to keep growing. Explore open roles at ev.energy and join us in shaping the future of clean energy.
This year, ev.energy has been recognized with awards that highlight our dedication to sustainability, innovation, and exceptional service. We were recognized as a Darcy Partners Top Innovator in Power and Utilities, named a 2024 Global Cleantech 100 Company in Transportation and Logistics for the third year running, and received a Environmental + Energy Leader award. Additionally, Wood Mackenzie ranked ev.energy as the top EV VPP specialist in its North America Market Report, solidifying our leadership in grid flexibility solutions.
We also celebrated our third consecutive year as a carbon-negative company - a milestone that reflects our commitment to the environment. Looking ahead, we’re excited to share more about our impact when we release our 2024 Carbon Impact Report early next year.
In March, we were officially recertified as a B Corporation, achieving an impressive score of 112, a significant improvement from 88.8 in 2020. This progress reflects advancements in key areas like Workers and Environment, underscoring our commitment to high social and environmental standards.
Equally rewarding is the feedback we continue to receive from our driver community. With a customer satisfaction score of 96%, we’re proud to know drivers value the service we provide. Their trust and support inspires us to keep pushing forward every day.
To everyone who has contributed to this journey - our team, partners, and customers - thank you. Your support and belief in our mission inspire us every day, and I’m incredibly grateful to share this journey with you.
Looking ahead, we remain steadfast in our commitment to delighting drivers, empowering our customers, and making EVs a cornerstone of the energy transition. By enabling seamless integrations, delivering impactful programs, and championing sustainability, we’re building a future where transportation and energy systems work harmoniously to benefit everyone.
There’s always more to accomplish, but with our shared vision, we’re poised to make an even bigger impact in the years ahead. Together, we can continue to lead the charge toward decarbonized transport and energy systems that benefit drivers, businesses, and the planet alike.
